DNA and protein synthesis (P2C7) Flashcards
What are the 3 key parts of a nucleotide?
- Phosphate
- Sugar
- A base
Where is the DNA contained?
DNA is contained inside chromosomes.
How many bases code for one amino acid?
3 bases code for one amino acid.
What is a nucleotide?
A nucleotide is the monomer that makes up the polymer DNA.
What decides the shape of a protein?
A protein’s shape is decided by the different combination of amino acids that will bond together differently.
What is transcription?
Transcription is the creation of mRNA inside the nucleus.
How does transcription work?
During transcription, a part of the DNA is split and mRNA is created based on one strand (using opposite bases). T is replaced by a U in mRNA.
How does mRNA leave the nucleus?
mRNA leaves through a nuclear pore.
Where does mRNA go after leaving the nucleus?
mRNA leaves the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm. It will then find a ribosome.
What is a set of 3 bases in mRNA called?
3 bases in mRNA is called a codon.
What composes tRNA?
tRNA is made up of an amino acid and an anticodon.
