Blood and circulation (P1C7) Flashcards
Where does oxygenated blood enter the heart?
Oxygenated blood enters from the lungs through the pulmonary vein.
Where does oxygenated blood leave the heart from?
Oxygenated blood leaves the heart through the aorta.
Where does blood (in general) enter the heart?
Blood enters the heart through the atria, and then passes through into the ventricles.
Where is the heart’s pacemaker located?
The pacemaker is located in the right atrium (marked at the top of the hollow section in diagrams)
Where does deoxygenated blood enter the heart?
Deoxygenated blood enters the heart through the vena cava.
Where does deoxygenated blood leave the heart?
Deoxygenated blood leaves the heart through the pulmonary artery.
What is the trachea?
The trachea is the windpipe, through which oxygen reaches the lungs.
What are bronchi?
Bronchi are two tubes that originate from the trachea.
What are bronchioles?
Bronchioles are many small tubes that originate from the bronchi.
What are alveoli?
Alveoli are tiny air sacs that originate from the bronchioles.
What makes alveoli effective oxygen transfer mediums? (3)
- Alveoli have a very large total surface area.
- Alveoli have a very rich blood supply, so that as much blood can be oxygenated as possible.
- Alveoli are very close the the capillaries, so that the gases do not have to diffuse as far.
