The Nervous System And Homeostasis Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system?
Enables organisms to react to their surroundings and coordinates behavior
What are the two parts of the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal chord
Why are reflex actions rapid and automatic?
They do not involve the conscious part of the brain
Why are reflex actions important?
For survival and to prevent damage to the body
Give the pathway of a nervous response
Stimulus
Receptor
Coordinator
Effector
Response
What is a stimulus?
A change in the internal or external environment
What is a synapse?
Junction between two neuroses where chemicals are released, allowing impulses to cross
What is the fiction of neurons?
Carry electrical impulses around the body
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of a constant internal environment
Why is homeostasis important?
Maintains optimal conditions for cell and organ function, and enzyme activity
Give 3 internal conditions controlled in homeostasis
Body temp
Blood glucose concentration
Water levels
Give 3 things all control systems include
Receptors, coordination centers and effectors
Name 3 coordination centers
Brain
Spinal chord
Pancreas
Name 3 types of effectors
Muscles and glands
Plan a practical to measure reaction time
Working in pairs, have one person hold a ruler vertically with zero at the bottom. The second person should steady their arm on the edge of a bench underneath the ruler. The first person drops the ruler and the second person should catch the ruler between their thumb and forefinger without moving their arm. Record the number on the ruler above the catchers thumb. Repeat at least 3 more times, and measure the difference between each turn.
What is a dependant variable?
What we measure
What is the control variable?
What we keep the same
What are 2 systems controlled by homeostasis?
Body water concentration
Blood glucose concentration
Homeostasis may involove NERVOUS/STRESS BASED chemical responses
Nervous
These responses during homeostasis are AUTOMATIC/MANUAL, which means there does not need to be conscious thought to bring about the response
Automatic
Control systems are made up of EFFECTORS/RECEPTORS which detect stimuli, COORDINATION CENTERS/BRAINS, that process the information, and EFFECTORS/RECPETORS which bring about a response
Receptors
Coordination centre
Effectors
Why might an anomaly occur during reaction time measurements
The person being tested may detect a distraction
One purpose of homeostasis is to provide optimal conditions for enzymes to work in. Name 2 factors that can affect the rate of enzyme action
PH
temp
Homeostasis involves a number of automatic control systems.
Describe why they are described as automatic systems
They occur without thought
