The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the two main functions of the nervous system?
- to collect process and respond to in formation in the environment
- to co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
What are the 2 systems the nervous system is divided into?
- central nervous system (CNS)
- Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What is the central nervous system (CNS) made up of?
- brain
- spinal cord
What is the function of the brain?
- centre of conscious awareness
- highly developed in humans
- brain distinguishes our higher mental functions from other animals
How many hemispheres is the brain divided into?
2
What makes mammals brains different from other organisms brains?
- Mammals have a cerebral cortex
- the cerebral cortex is 3mm thick and covers the brain like an orange peel covers an orange
What is the function of the spinal cord?
- extension of the brain
- passes messages to and from the brain
- Connects nerves to peripheral nervous system (PNS)
- responsible for reflex actions
What are the two components of the peripheral nervous system?
- Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
- Somatic Nervous system (SNS)
What does the autonomic nervous system consist of?
- sympathetic nervous system
- parasympathetic nervous system
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
- returns body to relaxed state
- decrease heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system?
- Involved in responses that prepare us for fight or flight
- increases heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure
