Endocrine System and ANS COPY Flashcards
1
Q
What happens in a fight or flight response?
A
- stressor perceived
- hypothalamus activates pituitary gland
- triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system
- changes parasympathetic state (resting state) to sympathetic state (physiologically aroused)
2
Q
What is adrenalines role in the fight or flight response?
A
- released from adrenal medulla into bloodstream
- triggers physiological changes in the body
- creates physiological arousal necessary for fight or flight
3
Q
How is the fight or flight response an immediate and automatic response?
A
as soon as the threat is detected everything happens in an instant
4
Q
What is parasympathetic action?
A
- once the threat passes the parasympathetic nervous system returns the body to a resting state
- reduces activities of the body that were increased by the sympathetic nervous system
