The nervous system Flashcards
3 main functions of the NS
Receive info, process info, coordinate a response.
Brain
The brain is responsible for virtually everything we do.
Spinal cord
Receives sensory info from the body and to the brain. Also receives motor info from the brain and sends it to relevant parts of the body.
Central NS
Transmits info to and from Peripheral NS
Peripheral NS
Transmits info to and from the Central NS
Somatic NS
Carries messages from sensory receptors in the body to the Central NS, and motor messages from the Central NS to skeletal muscles.
Autonomic NS
Connects Central NS to internal organs and glands.
Sympathetic NS + Parasympathetic NS
S- prepares body for action.
P- calms body after action.
Spinal reflex (4 steps)
- Sensory receptors detect harm + send message to the spinal cord.
- Interneuron relays message to motor neurons that movement needs to happen.
- Motor message sent to relevant skeletal muscles to withdraw.
- Message is sent to the brain and processed as pain.
