Structures of the brain Flashcards
Cerebral cortex
Outer surface of cerebrum. Involved in ‘higher order’ complex mental abilities like perception, learning + memory.
Medulla
Controls vital functions. Coordinates movement and regulates posture + balance. Also involved in some cognitive processes.
Pons
Involved in sleep, dreaming + waking.
Cerebellum
Coordinates fine muscle movements and regulates posture + balance. Also involved in some cognitive processes.
Cerebellum
Coordinates fine muscle movements and regulates posture + balance. Also involved in some cognitive processes.
Reticular formation
Helps screen incoming info. Also helps maintain consciousness and regulates arousal.
Thalamus
Receives and processes info from sensory organs. Sends the info to relevant area of the brain.
Hypothalamus
Regulates release of hormones from glands. Controls basic survival actions.
Cerebrum
Primarily responsible for cognitive processes.
