THE NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
what is the CNS made up of?
the brain and the spinal cord
what is the peripheral NS?
everything outside the CNS
what is the sensory neurone?
the receiving neurone activated by our sense
what is the motor neurone?
they control our movement
where is the relay neurone found?
found in the spinal cord
what are receptors?
the first part of the contact detector
what are effectors and what are some examples?
they carry out the motor neurone commands, e.g muscles/glands
what are the stages for a reflex action?
stimulus, receptor, sensory, relay, motor, effector
what are the stages for a non-reflex action?
stimulus, receptor, sensory, brain, motor, effector
what are the chemicals found in the synaptic neurones called?
neurotransmitters
what is the gap between two neurones called?
a synapse
what is a synapse?
the connection between two neurones
how is an electric signal transmitted to the next neurone?
once the chemicals (neurotransmitters) are released, they diffuse across the gap and attach to the receptors on the post-synaptic neurone which triggers a new electrical signal
