The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system?
To receive information for the environment, process the information and create a response to it.
What are the 3 main parts of the nervous system?
The brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
What are the 3 main parts of the brain?
The cerebrum, cerebellum and the brain stem.
What does the cerebrum do?
It controls our thinking, emotions, sensations, memory and movement.
What does the cerebellum do?
It coordinates movement and balance.
What is the brain stem?
It is an extension of the spinal cord located at the base of the brain. It received and relays information from the face, eyes, ears, nose and tongue. It is also responsible for keeping our heart beating and for our breathing.
What does the spinal cord do?
The spinal cord is made up of millions of never. Like the Brian stem, it also receives and relays information.
What are nerves?
They are made up of millions of cells called neurone. Each neurone has a long truck called an axon and many smaller branches called dendrites. They pass on messages by releasing chemicals over small spaces between axons and dendrites called synapses.
The body receives information form the environment the…?
Sensory nerves: eyes, ears, nose and skin.
The sensory nerves carry the message to the spinal cord.
The spinal cord relays the message to the brain.
The brains then makes sense out of the information
…
And sends its own instructions back down the spinal cord.
Motor nerve carried these instructions to the muscles.
The muscles then do what the nerves have instructs them to do.
