The Immune System Flashcards
What is the function of the immune system?
Is to destroy any germs that invade the body.
What is the immune system made up of…?
White blood cells
Antibodies
Lymph nodes
Spleen
What is usually the first to spot, when germs-bacteria or viruses enter the body?
White blood cells called a macrophage. The macrophage eats it and quickly travels to a nearby lymph node or the spleen, which house other blood cells.
What are the two types of white blood cells?
T-cells and B-cells
What does the T-Cells do?
They find out what germ looks like from the macrophage and go immediately to attack the germ.
What do the B-cells do?
They don’t kill the germs directly like the other white blood cells. They make a weapon called antibody that is made to fit perfectly into the invading germs.
What do the antibodies do?
They are released into the bloodstream and eventually coat the germ, preventing it from harming the body. This makes if easier for the T-cells to attack and kill the germ.
What does the skin do?
It is the first thing to defend against the invading organisms. It provides a waterproof barrier that protects the body from infection and injury.
