The Muscular/ Skeletal System Flashcards
What should the function of the muscular/ skeletal system?
Is to provide structural support and protection, as well as the power needed for movement.
The skeleton is made up of different types of bones.
Skull-protects brain
Ribs- protect heart and lungs and several abdominal organs
There are many different types of joints…
Ball-socket, Hinge and pivot joints.
What are ligaments?
Are bands of strong tissue that connect bone to bone and hold joints together.
What is cartilage?
It covers the bone ends to help the joint move smoothly and to protect the bones from wear and tear.
What are muscles?
They are attached to bone by tough fibrous bands called tendons.
What are skeletal muscles?
Provide the power needed to move the joints and bones and produce body movements.
What are the cardiac muscles?
They are found in the heart, it provides the power to pump blood to the rest of the body.
What is the smooth muscle?
Is found in the walls of the body’s internal organs. Smooth muscle performs many actions that are completely involuntary, such as forcing food through the intestinal tract.
