The Nervous System Flashcards
What are receptors?
Groups of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus.
What is the central nervous system?
Where all the information from the sense organs are sent. It is also where reflex and actions are coordinated.
Where is the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord
What is a sensory neuron?
They detect stimuli and send the message to the central nervous system
What are relay neurones?
They pass messages from one neuron to another neuron
What is a neuron?
They transmit the info (as electrical impulses) very quick to and from the central nervous system.
What is a motor neuron?
They send messages from the central nervous system to the muscles or glands
How does a message travel?
It travels as an electrical impulse through the nerve cells
The message then travels as a chemical along the synapse
The synapse allows control of the messages
What is the order of the reflex actions?
Stimulus Sensory receptor Sensory neuron Relay neuron Motor neuron Effector muscle/gland
What is a synapse?
The connection between two neurons. The nerve signal is referred to as chemicals which diffuse across the gap.
What is a reflex?
An automatic response to a certain stimuli.
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment you live in which you may need to react to. You are constantly monitoring what is going on in case you need to react to it.
How is ion regulated?
Ion is taken in by food and if you have to much ion it is removed by sweat or the kidneys maintain it and get rid of it though your urine.
How is water lost?
Skin as sweat
Lungs as breath
Kidneys as urine
How is your body temp controlled?
By the brain
