Hormones Flashcards
What do hormones do?
Control things in the organ and cells which need consistent adjustment
What hormones are produced in the pituitary gland?
Fsh and lh
What hormones are produced in the ovaries?
Oestrogen
What are nerves?
Very fast actions that act for a short time and have a precise area.
What are hormones?
Slower actions that act for a long time and in a more general way.
What is stage one of the menstrual cycle?
The bleeding starts and the uterus lining breaks down for around 4 days
What is stage 2 of the menstrual cycle?
The lining of the uterus builds up again at day 4-14 a thick layer full of blood vessels is formed.
What happens in stage 3 of the menstrual cycle?
A egg is released from the ovaries at day 14
What happens at stage 4 of the menstrual cycle?
The wall is maintained for 14 days until day 28. If no fertilised egg has reached the uterus the lining breaks down again.
What is fsh?
It is produced by the pituitary gland and causes the egg to mature in the ovaries. It stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen.
What is oestrogen?
Produced by the ovaries and causes the pituitary gland to produce lh.
What is Lh?
Produced by the pituitary gland and stimulated the realise of the egg.
What ways can women reduce fertility?
Women can take oestrogen everyday which reduces the release of an egg. This keeps the oestrogen levels high and restrains the production of fsh.
Progesterone prevents the sperm getting to the egg because it creates a thick mucus around the cervical.
The pill
What is a way to increase fertility?
Some women have low levels of fsh so their eggs cannot mature. Fsh and lh can be injected to stimulate egg release.
How does Ivf work?
Eggs are collected from the woman’s ovaries and they are fertilised with the mans sperm in the lab. Once these have grown into embryos one or two are transferred into the woman’s uterus.
