The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Nervous System?
A conglomerate of billions of cells to provide a communication network within the body
What are the three primary functions of the Nervous System
Sensory, Integrative, and Motor Functions
Describe the roles of the three primary functions of the Nervous System
Sensory = Senses Change in the external environment Integrative = Analyzes sensory info for proper decision making Motor = neuromuscular response to sensory information
What cell transmits information through electrical and chemical signals?
The Neuron.
What is the role of the Axon on the Neuron?
Provides Communication from the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body
What is the role of the Dendrites on the Neuron?
Gather Information in the body and transmits back into the Neuron
What are the three main types of Neurons?
Sensory (afferent), Interneurons, and Motor (efferent) Neurons.
What are the roles of the three primary Neurons?
Sensory = Transmit Nerve Impulses FROM effector sites to brain & spinal cord Inter = One Neuron to Another Motor = Transmit Nerve Impulses from the brain and spinal cord TO the effector site
What is the CNS?
Portion of the Nervous System consisting of brain & Spinal Cord that coordinates activity of all parts of the body.
What is the PNS?
Portion of Nervous system consisting of cranial and spinal nerves that spread throughout the body. Connects CNS to the rest of the body.
Describe the Whole Nervous System Structure
- Nervous Sysem
- CNS & PNS
- Motor & Sensory Nerves
- Auto & Somatic Nervous System - Voluntary vs Involuntary movements
- Sympa & Parasympathetic Nervous System- Contracts vs rests
Where is the GTO & what is its purpose
Golgi Tendon Organs are within the Tendon of Muscles. Theyre sensory receptors that cause muscle to contract to to avoid injury
What is an efferent Neuron
Motor Neuron
What is an afferent Neuron
Sensory Neuron
