The Endocrine System Flashcards
Define the Endocrine system and its role
a system of glands that secrete hormones into the bloodstream to regulate variety of body functions, including control of mood, growth & development, tissue function, & metabolism
What does the endocrine system consist of?
Host Organs (Glands), Chemical Messengers (hormones), and Target Cells (Receptors)
What is the endocrine system exampled as?
A thermostat to body temperature - it regulates bodily functions
Which Gland is considered the “Master” Gland and why?
The Pituitary Gland because it controls the functions of other glands
How many sections are there within the pituitary gland and what are they?
Three sections = Anterior, Intermediate, and Posterior
What is Hormone is the Pituitary Gland mainly responsible for?
Growth Hormone.
What is the Thyroid Gland responsible for?
producing hormones that regulate the rate of metabolism.
What is the Adrenal Gland responsible for?
Secreting hormones including cortisol and adrenaline in response to stress
What is epinephrine, or norepinephrine
Adrenaline
What is the gland is the hypothalamus hormone most associated with
Pituitary gland.
What is Glucose
A Primary energy source digested primarily from carbs
Where is Blood Glucose Regulated
The Pancreas
What hormones does the Pancreas produce?
Insulin and Glucagon
What is the difference between glucagon and glycogen?
Glycogen is stored energy in the liver and muscle taken from blood glucose helped by insulin.
Glucagon RAISES blood glucose levels by releasing glycogen sores from the liver
What does glucagon do versus insulin?
Insulin helps store glucose as glycogen. Glucagon does the opposite; it helps turn glycogen BACK to glucose to be released back to the blood stream
