The nervous system Flashcards
Name the receptors for:
- Eyes
- Ears
- Skin
- Mouth
- Nose
- Light
- Sound
- Touch
- Chemical
- Chemical
What does the CNS made up of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment
Describe how the nervous system works.
- Receptors sends electrical impulses (warnings) through sensory neurones
- It then passed onto a relay neurone and then a motor neurone.
- From the motor neurone it goes to the effectors and then responses or reflexes are made.
What are the three neurones involved in the nervous system?
Sensory neurone
Relay neurone
Motor neurone
What is a receptor?
Receptors detect stimuli
What are effectors?
Muscles or glands
What are synapses?
- The joining of two neurones (nerve cells that are ending and beginning)
- The nerve signal is transferred by chemicals that diffuse across the gap which set off an electrical signal in the new neurone.
What are reflexes?
Quick responses to protect you
Why don’t reflexes involve the brain?
The brain would take to long to decide on a response
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining a constant internal environment by balancing body functions
Give 4 examples of conditions in your body that need to be kept steady so your body can function properly.
- Levels of CO2
- Levels of oxygen
- Water content
- Body temperature
What triggers our body to keep certain conditions steady and change them?
Changes in the environment
Give three ways we can lose water from our body
- Sweat
- Breath
- Urine
What does insulin control?
Blood sugar levels
