15
Q

Why is tissue culture better than cloning plants normally?

A

It guarantees you can produce thousands of offspring from one individual plant

16
Q

How does cloning animals work? (4 marks)

A
  1. Divide each embryo into lots of cells
  2. Each cell grows into an identical embryo
  3. Transfer embryos into their host mothers which have hormones for pregnancy
  4. Clones are born but they’re not biologically related to their mothers
17
Q

What was the name of the technique used to make Dolly the sheep?

A

Adult cell cloning

18
Q

How is adult cell cloning done? (4 marks)

A
  1. The nucleus is removed from an unfertilised egg cell
  2. Another nucleus is taken from an adult body cell
  3. The new cell is given an electric shock that makes it start dividing to form embryo cells
  4. When the embryo has developed into a ball of cells it is inserted into a womb of an adult female to continue development.
19
Q

How might adult cell cloning be an advantage to animals?

A

It could save animals from extinction

20
Q

What is genetic engineering?

A

Changing the genetic material of an organism
