The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
A change in your environment causing you to react
What are sense organs?
Ears, Nose, Tongue, Eyes, Skin
What are receptors?
They are a group of cells which are sensitive to the stimulus
What can a stimulus be?
Light, Sound, Touch, Pressure, Pain, Chemical, or a change in Position or Temperature
The Central Nervous System does what?
It is where all the info is sent. It coordinates the reflexes and actions. It consists of the brain and spinal cord.
What are neurones?
Nerve cells, which transmits the info as electrical pulses to and from the CNS
What are the effectors?
Muscles and glands, which are sent ‘instructions’ showing how to respond accordingly
What are sensory neurones?
The nerve cells that carry the impulses from the receptors to the CNS
What are relay neurones?
The nerves cells that carry signals from the sensory neurones to the motor neurones
What are motor neurones?
The nerve cells that carry signals from the CNS to the effector muscles or glands.
What is a synapse?
The gap between two neurones
How does the nerve signal get across the gap?
It is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across
