The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
Change in your environment.
What are the five sense organs?
Eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin.
What are receptors?
Groups of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus. They change stimulus energy into electrical impulses.
Give an example of a sense organ and its receptors.
Eye and light receptors, Ear and sound receptors, Nose and smell receptors, Nose and smell receptors, Tongue and taste receptors, Skin which is sensitive to touch, pressure, pain and temperature change.
What is the CNS?
Central Nervous System where all information from sense organs is sent and where reflexes and actions are coordinated.
What are neurones?
Nerve cells that transmit the information as electrical impulses quickly to and from the CNS.
What are sensory neurones?
Nerve cells that carry signals as electrical impulses from the receptors in the sense organs to the CNS.
What are relay neurones?
Nerve cells that carry signals from the sensory neurones to motor neurones.
What are motor neurones?
Nerve cells that carry signals from the CNS to the effector muscles and glands.
What do synapses do?
Connect neurones.
Reflexes are _________ responses to certain stimuli.
Automatic.
Give a brief explanation of a reflex arc.
Stimulus, Receptor, Sensory Neurone, Relay Neurone, Motor Neurone, Effector, Response.
