Fighting Disease Flashcards
What are the two main types of Pathogen?
Bacteria and Viruses
How can bacteria make you feel ill?
1) damaging cells
2) producing toxins
Viruses are not ____.
cells
What do viruses do?
They replicate themselves by invading your cells and use the cell to produce many copies of themselves. The cells then burst and the damage makes you feel ill.
How does a White Blood Cell protect you from microbes?
1) Consuming them.
2) Producing antitoxins.
3) Producing antibodies.
What is injected during a vaccination?
Dead or Inactive microorganisms.
What does the MMR vaccine protect you against?
Measles, Mumps and Rubella.
What are the pros and cons of a vaccination?
1) They have helped control lots of diseases.
2) Epidemics can be prevented
- —————————————————————————
1) They don’t always work.
2) Side effects, bad reactions such as swelling to seizures.
Painkillers are drugs that __________.
Relieve Pain
What do antibiotics do?
They kill/prevent the growth of bacteria.
What can’t antibiotics treat?
Viruses.
What happens if antibiotics are overused?
Bacteria can mutate to become resistant to an antibiotic.
What can we learn from Ignaz Semmelweis?
That basic hygiene is essential in controlling disease.
What are the dangers of bacteria?
1) Bacteria can mutate to produce new strains.
2) The new stain could be resistant to antibiotics or a strain no one has encountered before.
3) Could cause an epidemic
What are the dangers of viruses?
They tend to mutate often and this makes it harder to develop vaccines because of the changed to the DNA.
