The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the two structural divisions of the nervous system?
CNS
PNS
Coordinating agency for all systems
The nervous system
Consists of the brain and spinal cord
CNS
Consists of all the cranial and spinal nerves
PNS
Nonconducting cells that produce and support
Neuralgia or glial cells
Neuroglial cells that produces myelin in the PNS
Schwann cells
Most abundant neuroglial cell in the CNS
Astrocytes
The neuroglial cell that produces myelin in the CNS
Oligodendrocytes
Fatty material covering some axons that insulates and protects the fiber
Myelin
Functional conducting cells of the nervous system
Neuron
Neuron fibers that conduct impulses to the cell body; receptors
Dendrites
Conducts impulses away from the cell body
Axons
Has myelin axons
White matter
Has non-myelinated structures
Ex.
Gray matter
Ex. Cell bodies, dendrites
Spaces or gaps between Myelin sheaths
Nodes
Outermost thin coating of Schwann cells
Neurilemma
Point of junction for transmission of the nerve impulse
Synapse
Chemical released that enables a nerve impulse to cross a synapse
Neurotransmitter
Gap between neural cells; Where the neurotransmitter is secreted
Synaptic cleft
Site that responds to a neurotransmitter
Receptor
Type of neuron found in the central nervous system; Have several dendrites in one axon
Multipolar neuron
Found in PNS; Have one axon and one dendrite
Bipolar neuron
Found in PNS; have 1 projection
Unipolar
Conduct impulses to CNS
Sensory/afferent neurons
