Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the difference between the endocrine system and the exocrine system?
Exocrine secretes into a duct that leads to somewhere else, endocrine secretion directly into tissues and blood
What is the function of the endocrine system?
Secreting hormones
What 3 things control the endocrine system?
Hypothalamus
Internal environment
Nervous system
What are the 6 hormones secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland?
Growth hormone Thyroid stimulating hormone Adrenocorticotropic hormone Follicle-stimulating hormone Leuteinizing hormone Prolactin
What are the 2 hormones secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland?
Antidiuretic hormone
Oxytocin
What are the 3 hormones secreted by the thyroid gland?
Tetraiodothyronine(T3)
Triiodothyronine(T4)
Calcitonin
Which hormone does the parathyroid glands secrete?
Parathyroid hormone
Which hormone does the adrenal medulla secrete?
Chromaffin
Which 3 hormones does the adrenal cortex secrete?
Aldosterone
Cortisol
Certain sex hormones
Which hormones does the pancreas secrete?
Alpha cells
Beta cells
Delta cells
Which hormone does the pineal gland secrete?
Melatonin
Which hormone does the thymus gland secrete?
Thymosins
What are the effects of the growth hormone?
Cell division
What are the effects of the thyroid stimulating hormone?
Control secretions from the thyroid
What are the effects of the Adrenocorticotropic hormone?
Stimulates the adrenal cortex
What are the effects of the Follicle-stimulating hormone?
Stimulates the production of gametes
What are the effects of the Leuteinizing hormone?
Secretions of sex organ hormones
What are the effects of Prolactin?
Stimulates milk production
What are the effects of the Antidiuretic hormone?
Helps conserve water and decreased urine regulation
What are the effects of Oxytocin?
Stimulates the release of milk
Involved in uterus contractions
No established function in males
What are the effects of the Tetraiodothyronineoxine ?
Effects cellular metabolism
What are the effects of the triiodothyronine ?
Less abundant but 5x more potent than T4
What are the effects of Calcitonin?
Decreases blood calcium
What are the effects of the Parathyroid hormone?
Increases blood calcium
