The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the two main parts of the nervous system? (first two branches)
Central Nervous System & Peripheral Nervous System
What two parts make up the Central Nervous System?
Brain & Spinal Cord
What two parts make up the Peripheral Nervous System?
Somatic and Autonomic Nervous System
What two parts make up the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System
What does the central nervous system do?
It is the thinker
What does the peripheral nervous system do?
It is the doer
What does the somatic nervous system do?
It is all our voluntary movements
sensory neurons (in)
motor neurons (out)
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
It is our involuntary (automatic) movements
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Fight or Flight
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Rest and Digest
What does the brain do?
It is the control centre/thinker
What does the spinal cord do?
Sends/receives messages between the central and peripheral nervous systems.
What do sensory neurons do?
They carry messages to the brain and spinal cord from cells in the cell organs (eyes, ears, tongue, skin)
What do Interneurons do?
They transmit messages between neurons in the body and the central nervous system.
What do motor neurons do?
Carry messages from the central nervous system to the muscles to tell them to move.
What are the parts of a neuron?
Dendrites, nucleus, cell body, axon, myelin sheath and axon terminals.
What does the left hemisphere of the brain control?
The right side of the body, language, logical thinking, numbers.
What does the right hemisphere of the brain control?
The left side of the body, creativity, spatial awareness, recognition of faces and places.
What does the basal ganglia control?
Movement, learning and habits
What does the Hippocampus control?
Memory and navigation. Where short-term memories are converted into long-term memories
What does the Thalamus do?
alertness, sensory and motor information
What does the Amygdala do?
processes emotions; especially fear
What does the Hypothalamus do?
Regulates body temp, hunger, fatigue and sleep.
F-POT
What are the four lobes of the brain?
Frontal Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Occipital Lobe and Temporal lobe.
What does the occipital lobe do?
Located at the back.
vision, colour perception, visual perception.
What does the Temporal lobe do?
Located at the sides.
Hearing language comprehension, memory retrieval.
What does the parietal lobe do?
Located at the top.
sensation, touch, body direction/orientation.
What does the Frontal lobe do?
Located at the front.
problem-solving, personality, thinking, and motor control.
