The nervous system Flashcards
What does the nervous system in humans consist of?
The brain, the spinal cord and the nerves which connect to all areas of the body
What does the nervous system allow us to do?
React to the external and internal world in rapid and complex ways
What are the two core qualities any animal needs to survive?
Assimilation and accommodation
What is assimilation?
When a perception or stimulus from the external world is taken and incorporated into your internal world without changing the essence or structure of the internal world
What is accommodation?
Responding to a perception ot stimulus from the external world by changing your internal world in order to accommodate new information
What is encephalisation?
The process of organisms cramming the majority of senses near the largest chunk of neuron’s matter, in order to minimise the distance that sensory information has to travels to the information has less space to travel and the the brain can formulate a response therefore quickly
How many neutrons are in the human nervous system?
10-12 billion, once one dies it is gone forever
What type of cels does the nervous system also possess?
Glial cells which support and keep alive the neuron’s by feeding them with nutrients and also eliminating n=dead nerons and pathogen
