The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the nervous system
A
- a specialised network of cells and is our primary internal communication system
2
Q
2 main functions
A
- To collect, process and respond to information in the environment
- To coordinate the working of different organs and cells
3
Q
The nervous system - 2 subsystems
A
- Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Peripheral Nervous System
4
Q
CNS
A
- Made up of the brain (control centre) and the spinal cord (relays info between brain and rest of body)
- Controls behaviour and the regulation of the bod’s physiological processes
5
Q
PNS
A
- Transmits messages via neurons to and from the CNS
6
Q
Autonomic Nervous System
A
- Governs vital functions - breathing
7
Q
Somatic nervous system
A
- Governs muscle movement and receives info from sensory receptors
- Sends messages to CNS and other parts of body
