Neurons Flashcards
1
Q
What are neurons
A
- Specialised cells that carry neural info throughout the body
2
Q
Sensory neuron
A
- Carries messages from PNS to CNS
3
Q
Relay neuron (interneuron)
A
- Connects sensory to motor and other relay
4
Q
Motor neuron
A
- Connects CNS to effectors
5
Q
The structure of a neuron
A
- Cell Body = contains the genetic material of a cell
- Dendrites = carry nerve impulses from neurons towards the cell body
- Axons = Carries the impulses away from the cell body down the neuron
- Myelin Sheath = Covers the axon for protection and it speeds up electrical transmission of the impulse
- Nodes of Ranvier = speed up the transmission of the impulse by forcing it to jump across the gaps along the axon
- Terminal Buttons = Communicate with the next neuron in the chain across a gap (synapse)
6
Q
Location of neurons
A
- Motor neurons are in the CNS but have long axons and they form part of the PNS
- Sensory neurons are in the PNS
- Relay neurons are 97% of all neurons and are in the brain and visual system
