Q

The structure of a neuron

A
  • Cell Body = contains the genetic material of a cell
  • Dendrites = carry nerve impulses from neurons towards the cell body
  • Axons = Carries the impulses away from the cell body down the neuron
  • Myelin Sheath = Covers the axon for protection and it speeds up electrical transmission of the impulse
  • Nodes of Ranvier = speed up the transmission of the impulse by forcing it to jump across the gaps along the axon
  • Terminal Buttons = Communicate with the next neuron in the chain across a gap (synapse)

Q

Location of neurons

A
  • Motor neurons are in the CNS but have long axons and they form part of the PNS
  • Sensory neurons are in the PNS
  • Relay neurons are 97% of all neurons and are in the brain and visual system
