The nervous system Flashcards
What are the two main components of the nervous system?
-Central nervous system (CNS)
-Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What is the nervous system based on?
Electrical and chemical signals
What does the CNS consist of?
-Spinal cord
-Brain
What neurones carry impulses to the CNS?
Sensory neurones
What is the role of the spinal cord?
Transfer messages to and from the brain
What is the role of the Peripheral nervous system?
To relay impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body
What are the four lobes of the brain?
-Frontal lobe
-Occipital lobe
-Temporal lobe
-Parietal lobe
What is the peripheral nervous system split into?
-Somatic nervous system
-Autonomic nervous system
What is the role of the somatic nervous system?
Allows communication between the CNS and the outside world and provide muscle responses
What is two similarties between the autonomic NS and the Somatic NS?
-Both contain motor pathways
-Both respond to external stimuli
What is the role of the autonomic system?
Plays a role in homeostasis
What is the autonomic system made up of?
-Sympathetic pathway
-Parasympathetic pathway
What is the sympathetic pathway involved in?
Responses that prepare the body for flight or fight
What is the parasympathetic pathway involved in?
Returns us to our normal resting state, slowing down breathing rate and heart rate
What are two differences between the somatic NS and autonomic NS?
-Autonomic has two subcomponents, somatic only has one
-Somatic NS has both sensory and motor pathways, autonomic only has motor pathways
