Localisation of function Flashcards
What is lateralisation?
When physical and psychological functions are controlled by a particular hemisphere
Where is the visual area in the brain?
occipital lobe
What happens in the visual area?
Each eye sends information from the right visual field to the left visual cortex and vice versa
What does damage to wernicke’s area cause?
Wernicke’s aphasia
Produce language but have trouble understanding it
What does the auditory area process?
Speech based information
What does damage to the auditory area cause?
Produces hearing loss
What is localisation?
The theory that different areas of the brain are responsible for different behaviour
What does damage to broca’s area cause?
Speech that is slow, laborious and lacks fluency
What is a case study for Broca’s aphasia?
Tan could understand spoken language but unable to produce any coherent words and could only say ‘Tan’
What happens if the motor area of the brain is damaged?
Loss of fine motor movements
What does the motor area control?
Voluntary movement
Where is the motor area?
Frontal lobe
What does the somatosensory area process?
Sensory information from the skin
Where is the somatosensory area?
Parietal lobe
What is the cerebral cortex?
The outer layer of the brain, covering the inner parts of the brain
