Hemispheric lateralisation Flashcards
Who carried out split brain research?
Sperry
What does hemispheric lateralisation mean?
Refers to the knowledge that one side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body
What ‘s the left visual field connected to?
Right hemisphere
Where are the areas responsible for speech located?
Left hemisphere
What is the corpus callosum?
A thick bundle of millions of nerve fibres connecting the right and left hemisphere
What did Perry’s sample of ppts consist of?
11 split brain patients that had their corpus callosum cut due to severe epilepsy
What was Sperry’s procedure?
-Presented information to each hemisphere
-Ppts either required to say, draw or select objects.
What did Sperry find?
-information presented to the left hemisphere (RVF) could be spoken
-The right hemisphere could draw or select the object
What does sperry’s results show?
That the hemispheres are both capable of acting independently
plus supports the idea that the language centres are in the left hemisphere.
What is a weakness of the sample used in Sperry’s research?
-The sample was small so unable to generalise findings to wider population
-Results may be due to ppt variables as all ppts had varying amount of connections cut
Which research suggests that language may not be restricted to the LH?
Turk et al, had a patient that damaged their left hemisphere but still had their language.
What did Luck et al find?
That spilt-brain participants are better than normal controls
What is the right hemisphere superior at?
Visual-motor tasks
