The Nervous System Flashcards
what are the two main aspects of of the nervous system
- central nervous system
- peripheral nervous system
CNS components
- brain
- spinal cord
PNS components
- somatic nervous system
- autonomic nervous system
(sympathetic / parasympathetic)
what is the peripheral nervous system
- transmits messages to neurones to and from CNS - relaying nerve impulses
what is the somatic nervous system
- 12 pairs of cranial nerves
- 31 spinal nerves
= sends sensory impulses to CNS - sends motor impulses from CNS
what is the autonomic nervous system
- automatic actions that lack conscious though
eg. breathing / heartbeat
what is the sympathetic nervous system
- ‘fight or flight’
= primary activation circuits - increasing blood pressure
NTs= Acetylcholine / Norepinephrine
what is the parasympathetic nervous system
- ‘rest and digest’
conservation of energy
slows down SNS activation
NTs = Acetylcholine
difference between SNS/ PNS
(physical symptoms)
SNS = INCREASE HEARTRATE
PNS = DECREASE HEARTRATE
what are the main aspects of the brain
- cerebrum
- cerebellum
- diencephalon
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
- Brain stem
what are the lobes of the main hemispheres (left right) of the brain
- Frontal lobe
- Parietal lobe
- Temporal lobe
- Occipital lobe
Frontal lobe role
- higher order functions
- planning - abstract reasoning - logic - personality
(Broca’s Area - speech production)
Parietal lobe role
- integrates info between senses
- sense of touch / pain / temp
Temporal lobe role
- auditory information
(Wernicke’s Area - speech understanding) - memory
Occipital lobe role
- visual information
what is the role of the cerebrum
- outer layer of the brain
- split into hemispheres
- held together by corpus callosum
what is the role of the cerebellum
- motor skills / balance
- coordinates muscle movement
what is the role of the brain stem
motor sensory neurones travel through
- allows impulses to pass between spinal cord and brain
- regulated automatic functions - breathing etc.
