The Nervous System Flashcards
CNS
Brain
spinal cord
Manager of behaviour
PNS
nerves and receptors
Somatic NS
in CNS
function: input to sensory and output from motor brain
Autonomic NS
from heart, muscles, glands to brain
then motor neurone take info to vital organs
function: body regulation
SNS
ANS
increase in HR
PNS
Decrease in HR
sends blood to ENS
Neurons
Receive, process, and transmit electrochemical messages
Neuroglia
help neurons and they make up half of cell volume in the CNS
Neuron Structure
dendrites (input) attached onto Cell body
axons(output) on other side
Interneurons
Modulatory neurons - brain and spinal cord
Multipolar
several dendrites and 1 axon
Bipolar
1 main dendrite and 1 axon
in retina, ear
unipolar
1 process that branches out (pseudo unipolar)
Sensory Neurons
Afferent neurons
carry action potentials into the CNS through cranial/spinal nerves
Motor Neurons
Efferent neurons
AP away from the CNS to effectors
