Skull Flashcards
the axial skeleton
80 bones
Consists of The skull,
vertebral column, thoracic cage
The skull
8 Cranial bones
enclose the cranial cavity and protects the brain
cranial vault (Calvaria)
Cranial base- anterior, middle, posterior cranial fossae
What is a suture?
where two bones align
Frontal bone
Anterior part of the cranium
protects brain
has most anterior fossa
contains air filled frontal sinus
Parietal bones
x 2
sides of the head - superior and lateral
has coronal, saggital, lambdoid, squamous sutures
Occipital bone
Posterior wall and cranial fossa
connects with first bones of spine
foramen magnum - hole where the spine connects
jugular foramen- cavity where nerves pass through and where temporal and occipital bones meet.
Temporal bones
x2
below and to the side (Inferolateral) aspects of the skull and parts of the cranial floor.
squamous
tympanic- around the ear
mastoid- jaw
petrous- inside head
Sphenoid bone
3 processes-
Greater wings -superior orbital fissure
Lesser wings- optic canal - optic nerve passes through to eyes
Pterygoid- connects the cranium floor to other bones
Ethmoid bone
Deepest skull bone
Superior part of the nasal septum, roof of nasal cavities
part of medial wall of orbits
Cribriform plate- tissue like structure allows smell to pass through
Fontanels
Unossified soft regions of the skull
Carniosynostosis - premature suture formation
