the nervous system Flashcards
the central nervous system consist of
brain and spinal cord
CNS stands for
central nervous system
PNS lol stands for
peripheral nervous system
the PNS consists of nerves that relay info about the environment to the
brain, and relay info from brain to body
the PNS has three groups of
nerves
PNS: 1 there’s a group of nerves that control the
voluntary muscles
PNS: 2 there are nerves that carry info from the
sensory organs
PNS: 3 there’s a group of nerves that regulate involuntary functions such as
breathing, heartbeat, digestion
the skull protects
the brain (a main component of CNS)
what cushions the brain and spinal cord from injury
cerebrospinal
what is the myelin sheath
form of insulation on an electrical wire, preventing electrical impulses from passing to the wrong neuron
what is the myelin sheath made of
myelin, a fatty material
sensory receptors are special tissues or cells that receive input from the environment and
send signals to the CNS
what else do sensory receptors detect
pressure, temp, pain,
balance, position, motion
what are reflexes
actions requiring no involvement from the brain
