plants Flashcards
plants exchange gases with
their surroundings
plants require internal transportation to move
water and nutrients around
plants need a way of
reproducing
the root system: 1+
separate roots
the root system anchors
the plant
the root system absorbs
water and minerals from soil
the shoot system is composed of the
stem, leaves, flowers
the leaf (shoot system): photosynthesis. some leaves adapted for
support, protection, reproduction, attraction
the flower (shoot system) is for
sexual reproduction
the stem (shoot system) is to support
branches, leaves, flowers
plant stem cells are called
meristematic cells
meristematic cells are found in all
plant roots and shoots
plant meristematic cells can be
apical, lateral
vegetative reproduction: asexual process where a plant produces offspring from its
roots and shoots
plants three major tissue systems
dermal, vascular, ground
two types of dermal tissue:
epidermal and peridermal
dermal tissue forms outermost layer of
the plant
dermal tissue: epidermal tissue covers the surface of
leaves, stems, roots
epidermal leaf cells help
waterproof leafs surface
epidermal root cells have root hairs to
absorb water and minerals
dermal tissue: peridermal tissue forms in plants that produce
bark on stems and roots
vascular tissue transports
water and minerals from the roots to the rest
ground tissue cells are
the filler between dermal and vascular tissues
