Q

2 main functions of nervous system

A

Collect/process/respond to info in environment

Co-ordinate the working of different organs/cells in the body

Q

The brain (CNS)

A

Centre of all conscious awareness
-Surrounded by cerebral cortex
-Highly developed in humans
-2 hemispheres

Q

The spinal chord (CNS)

A

Extension of brain
-Passes messages to and from brain/connects to PNS
-Reflex actions (e.g pulling hand away from volcano)

Q

Peripheral nervous system (PNS)

A

Transmits messages to and from CNS

Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
Somatic nervous system (SNS)

Somatic nervous system (PNS)

A

Governs muscle movement/receives info from sensory receptors

Q

Example of hormone that affects cells in more than 1 body organ

A

Thyroxine
-Secreted from thyroid= affects heart cells (+ heart rate)/other cells in body (+ metabolic rate)

Q

Key endocrine gland

A

Pituitary gland
-Controls release of hormones from all other endocrine glands

Q

How does the Endocrine/ANS work together

A

Stressor perceived= hypothalamus activates pituitary gland
=Triggers activity in ANS
=ANS changes from resting state (parasympathetic) to aroused (sympathetic)

=Adrenaline released= physiological arousal for fight or flight response

Happens in an instant
(immediate and automatic)

Q

Parasympathetic action after fight or flight

A

Once threat passed, parasympathetic nervous system returns body to resting state

-Reduces activities of body that were increased by sympathetic branch (rest and digest response)
