Give an overview of the Nenets
1) Nomadic indigenous herding people who live on the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia.
2) The area has a reindeer population of 200,000
3) Their whole economy is based around reindeer as they provide clothing, tents, food, meat to sell and mode of transport (pulling sleds)
4) They have conflicts with TNCs as they want to protect the natural tundra and TNCs want to extract natural gas
How do the Nenets and the TNCs conflict?
1) Gazprom (Russian gas company) want to exploit the natural gas reserves of the Yamal Peninsula
2) Areas of the Peninsula have already been devastated by the building of roads, railways etc. in order to extract the gas.
3) A third of the summer pasture has been taken over
4) As a result there is less food for the reindeer leading to overgrazing. This can result in deaths of reindeer before they are slaughtered meaning the Nenets will have less venison to sell.
