Aesthetics (taste)
A critical reflection or art, nature and culture
Cultural capital
Cultural capital The idea that learning certain topics leads to monetary health earning more money.
Cultural transmission
The various ways in which culture is spread and discussed.
Divergence
Occurs when a group isolates elements of culture due to physical or human characteristics.
Emblems
Gestures that can substitute for words (because they have specific cultural meanings attached).
Enculturation
Learning the beliefs and values of one’s own culture.
Folk culture
Culture traditionally practiced by a small, homogeneous, rural group living in relative isolation from other groups.
Hegemony
Dominance made by one group over others.
Mass culture
Culture made by and for the masses.
Mediation
When a media text represents an idea, issue or event to us.
Naturalisation
The process of becoming a citizen of another country
Negotiated reading/Negotiation
Readers accept some aspects of the dominant reading and reject others
Norm
Something that is considered normal within a culture or sub culture: e.g. men don’t cry
Preferred reading (or dominant reading)
The reader accepts the reading intended by the author of the text, sharing their values or views.
Subjectivity
An individual’s sense of self and identity
