the national grid Flashcards
what does the national grid do?
provides electricity from power stations to our houses.
where does electricity go after being generated?
through a step up transformer
where does it go after going through a step up transformer?
through a network of cables and pylons
where does it go after going through pylons?
to a step down transformer and then into our houses.
describe step up and step down transformers
they have a varying number of coils on each side. more coils = higher voltage. less coils = lower voltage.
what does a step up transformer do?
takes electricity from low voltage to high voltage so that the electricity can move through a system with less energy loss. this makes it more efficient
what does a step down transformer do?
takes electricity from high voltage to low voltage so it’s safe to be in homes.
