The Muscular System Flashcards
What are muscles?
Muscles are long bundles of contractile tissue that form the basis of all movement.
Why do we need muscles?
-movement: muscles contract and cause movement at joints
-posture: muscles hold you upright
-joint stability: muscles hold bones and joints in place.
-heat production: muscles contract and cause blood to travel to heated area (this keeps us alive).
What are the muscular groups?
-skeletal muscles (voluntary)
-smooth muscles (involuntary)
-cardiac muscles (involuntary)
What are skeletal muscles?
Voluntary.
Attach to the skeleton and provide the skeleton with the ability to move.
What are smooth muscles?
Involuntary.
Found in organs or organ systems such as the digestive or respiratory system.
What are cardiac muscles?
Involuntary.
These muscles form the walls of the heart and contract to circulate blood.
What is adduction?
Moving a body part towards the mid-line of the body.
What is abduction?
Moving a body part away from the body.
What is flexion?
Bending a joint to decrease the angle between two bones or two body parts.
What is rotation?
Rotation involves moving a body part around an axis.
What is extension?
Straightening and extending of the joint to increase the angle between two bones or body parts.
