The Multi Store Model Of Memory (MSM) Flashcards

1
Q

what is the msm?

A

It describes how information flows through the memory system. The model suggests that memory is made up of three stores in processing.

Q

What is the sensory register?

A

The memory stores for each of our five senses, e.g. vision ( ionic store) and hearing (echoic store)

Q

What is a strength of the MSM

A

Supporting studies, showing that the STM and LTM a different, for example, baddely found that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when we are using STMs, but we mix up words that have similar meanings when we are using our LTMs

Q

Limitation of the MSM?

A

Evidence of more than one STM store

The case of KF a man with clinical memory disorder called amnesia, KFs STM for digits, was very poor when they were read out loud to him, but but his record was much better when he read the digits to himself

Q

Another limitation of the MSM?

A

another limitation is that prolonged rehearsal is not needed for transfer to LTM

Watkins found that the type of rehearsal is more important than the amount. This suggests that the MSM does not fully explain how long-term storage is achieved
