what is the multi-store model ?
a representation of how memory works in three stores. it also describes how information is transferred from one store to another, how it is remembered and how it is forgotten.
what are the characteristics of the short term memory store?
- the limited capacity store
- encoding is mainly acoustic
- capacity is 7+-2 things
- duration is between around 18 and 30 seconds
what are the characteristics of the long term memory store ?
- the permanent memory store
- coding is mainly semantic
- it has unlimited capacity
- can store memories up to a lifetime
what is meant by information processing ?
the mind works like a computer in that it processes information in terms of input, storage and retrieval.
what is encoding ?
the format in which information is stored in various memory stores
what is storage ?
the process of holding information in memory
what is retrieval ?
the process of transferring information from the LTM to STM, recalling information.
what is capacity ?
the amount of information that can be held in the memory store.
what is duration ?
the amount of time information can be held in memory.
