The Motor Effect and Electric Motors Flashcards
What happens when a current carrying wire is placed between to magnetic poles?
The magnetic field around the wire interacts with the magnetic field it has been placed in.
What is the Motor Effect?
When the magnet and conductor exert a force on each other and can cause the wire to move
What angle does the wire have to be at to experience full force?
- 90 to the magnetic field
- If it runs parallel it will experience NO force
How does the force always act?
At right angles to the magnetic field of the magnets and to the direction of the current in the wire
What happens to the strength of the magnetic field when the magnitude increases?
It increases
When also does the force increase?
When the amount of current passing through the conductor is increased
What are the 3 things that affect the force acting on a conductor in a magnetic field?
- Magnetic Flux Density - how many field lines there are
in a region. - Size of the current through the conductor
- The length of the conductor that is in the magnetic
field
When the current is at 90 degrees to the magnetic field it is in and the force acting on it can be found using which equation?
F = BIL
Force = Magnetic Flux Density x Current x Lenght
How does Flemmings left-hand rule work?
Use left hand
1) Point the First finger in the direction of the Field
2) seCond finger in the direction of Current
3) thuMb in the direction of force (Motion)
