Magnetism Flashcards
What are the two poles all magnets have?
North and South
What do all magnets produce?
Magnetic Field
shown by magnetic field lines on diagrams
Which way do all Magnetic Field lines travel?
North to South
The closer they are the stronger the field and the further they are the weaker it is
Where is the magnetic field strongest?
At the poles of the magnet
What is the force between a magnet and a magnetic material?
Always attractive
What will two of the same poles do if next to each other?
Repel
What will two opposite poles do if next to each other?
Attract
What way does a compass needle always point in?
The direction that the magnetic field is in
What is the needle in a compass made of?
A tiny bar magnet
How can you build up a picture of a magnetic field?
Move a compass around a magnet and trace the position of the needle around the magnet.
What direction will a compass point in if not near a magnet and why?
North, due to the Earth generating its own magnetic field.
What are the two types of magnet?
Permanent and Induced
What do Permanent magnets produce?
Their own magnetic field
What happens to Induced magnets when placed into a magnetic field?
- It will turn into a magnet
- Once removed from the field they will lose magnetism
What is the force always between permanent and induced magnets?
Always Attractive
What happens when a current flows through a wire?
A magnetic field is created around the wire
What is the field around the wire made up of?
Concentric circles perpendicular to the wire, with the wire as the centre
What happens if you change the direction of the current?
It will change the direction of the magnetic field
What rule can be used to work out the direction of the Magnetic Field?
Right-Hand Thumb Rule
How does the Right-Hand Thumb Rule work?
Using your right hand, point your thumb in the direction of the current and cul your fingers.
The direction of your fingers is the direction of the field.
