The Mole Flashcards
The Mole
The amount of substance, expressed in grams (g per mole) which contains as many elementary particles as there are in 12g pf the carbon-12 isotype
Molar Mass
Mass in grams of one mole of a certain substance
Avogadro Number
The number of atoms or molecules present in one mole of a substance equal to 6,022 X 10^23 elementary particles
Molar Volume
The volume occupied by 1 mole of any gas at standard temperature and pressure is 22.4dm^3.mol^-1
Solution
A homogeneous mixture of solute and solvent
Solute
The substance that is dissolved in the solution
Solvent
The substance in which another substance is dissolved, forming a solution
Concentration
The amount of solute per unit volume of solvent
Aqueous Solution
If the solvent used is water, the solution is known as an aqueous solution
Dissociation
Ionic substances dissociate when dissolved in water to form an aqueous solution
Ionisation
Ionisation takes place when a covalent compound dissolves in water. The covalent molecules break up to form ions in the solution.
Limiting Reagent
The substance used up first in a chemical reaction
