Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Organic Molecules
Molecules that contain carbon atoms
Hydrocarbons
Compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen atoms only
Functional Group
A distinctive group of atoms that is part of an organic compound and is responsible for the characteristic chemical properties of the substance
Homologous Series
A series of similar compounds which have the same functional group and have the same general formula in which each member differs from the previous one by a single CH^2 unit
Alkane
Contains only contains single bonds with the formula CnH2n+2
Alkene
Contains at least one double bond between the carbon atoms in the chain and has a general formula CnH2n
Alkynes
Contains at least one triple bond between the carbon atoms in the chain and has a general formula CnH2n-2
Molecular Formula
Shows how many atoms of each element are within the molecule
Structural Formula
Shows exactly where each atom in the molecule is found
Condensed Structural Formula
Shows how many hydrogen atoms are connected to each carbon atom
Catenation
The ability of carbon to bond to itself
Saturated Compound
A compound where all the bonds between carbon atoms are single bonds
Unsaturated Carbon
A compound in which there are double and triple bonds between carbon atoms
Isomer
Compounds with the same molecular formula but with different structural formulae and different names
