Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Electronegativity
A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons
Ionic Bond
Transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction
Covalent Bond
Sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two atoms
Non-Polar Covalent Bond (Pure Covalent)
An equal sharing of electrons
Polar Covalent Bonds
Unequal sharing of electrons leading to a dipole forming. This is the result of a difference in electronegativity between the atoms.
Metallic Bonding
The bond between a positive kernel and a sea of delocalised electrons.
Intramolecular Bond
The bond between atoms in molecules
Valency
The number of electrons gained, lost or shared to complete the outermost energy level
Valence Electrons
Electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom
Bonding Pair
The pair of electrons that are involved in a covalent bond
Dative Covalent Bond
A covalent bond where a single atom will provide both electrons needed for this bond to take place.
Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory
The shape of a molecule depends on the number of electrons surrounding the central atom. These electron pairs repel one another and would, therefore, like to be as far away as possible from each other. They will occupy all the space around the central atom
