The Mitochondria Flashcards
What is the function of the Mitochondria?
It is the site of aerobic respiration.
What does aerobic respiration produce and what is it used for?
ATP, which is a common energy source in the cell.
What is the appearance of the Mitochondria?
Oval shaped, with a double membrane.
How does the inner membrane form and what is it called?
The inner membrane is folded to form structures called the Cristae.
What is inside the inner membrane called.
The inner membrane is called the Matrix.
What are the Cristae and what is the purpose of them?
They are extensions, which provide a large surface area for the attachments of enzymes and proteins, needed for respiration.
What does the Matrix contain and why?
The Matrix contains proteins, lipids, ribosomes and DNA which allow the Mitochondria to control the production of proteins.
