The Chloroplasts Flashcards
What is the appearance of the chloroplast?
A small, flattened structure surrounded by a double membrane known as the chloroplast envelope.
What is the function of the chloroplast?
The site of photosynthesis.
Why does the chloroplast contain Ribosomes and DNA?
To create its own proteins needed for photosynthesis.
What internal structures does the chloroplast contain?
Thylakoids, Grana & the Stroma.
What is the purpose of Thylakoids?
Contains the green pigment chlorophyll, necessary for photosynthesis.
What is the Stroma?
Thick fluid containing enzymes, sugars and starch grains.
What does the Grana do?
The Grana stacks up to 100 disc like structures called Thylakoids.
Why does the Stroma contain Enzymes?
To create sugars needed for photosynthesis.
