The menstrual cycle, ovary, and follicle development Flashcards
What are the two ligaments of the uterus
Ovarian ligament Lateral ligament (links it to the wall)
What supplies the ovaries
Ovarian artery
Where does the ovarian artery arise from
Abdominal aorta at the level of the renal arteries
What does the ovarian artery supply
Ovary, and then continues towards the uterus
What drains the left ovary and where does it drain
Left ovarian vein- drains into the left renal vein
What drains the right ovary and where does it drain
Right ovarian vein - drains into inferior vena cava
Where does the Fallopian tube receive its arterial supply off
Branches from the ovarian artery
What anastomoses supply the uterus
Branch that supplies the Fallopian tube and the uterine artery (branch of the internal iliac)
What does the uterine artery also anastomose with
Vaginal artery
What does the vascular system arrangement of the vagina and uterus etc allow
rapid transfer of hormones from ovary to uterus and vagina. Allows co-ordination of physiological and histological changes of all 3 structures during the menstrual cycle
Where does gamut formation and follicle maturation occur
Cortex of ovary
What is there in the hilum of the ovary
Blood vessels, lymphatics, hilus cells (ovarian Leydig cells produces testosterone)
What is there in the medulla of the ovary
Stromal cells , mesenchymal cells vestigial remnants of embryonic Wolfian duct
