THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE (LESSON 2) Flashcards
the monthly shedding of the inner lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium, through the vagina in females of reproductive age.
MENSTRUATION
a small sac of fluid in the ovaries that contains a developing egg.
FOLLICLE
a temporary organ that appears every menstrual cycle and disappears if fertilization does not occur.
CORPUS LUTEUM
Stimulates ovarian follicle growth. Promotes estrogen production. Regulates menstrual cycle timing.
FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH)
Stimulates growth of ovarian follicles. Triggers LH surge for ovulation. Prepares uterus lining for potential pregnancy. Peaks before ovulation, and declines during menstruation.
ESTROGEN
Triggers ovulation. Forms corpus luteum. Regulates hormonal feedback.
LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH)
Produced after ovulation. Supports the thickening of the uterine lining for embryo implantation Inhibits LH to prevent premature ovulation, and Sustains early pregnancy by maintaining the uterine environment.
PROGESTERONE
DAY 1-5
Estrogen and progesterone levels are low
DAY 1-14
the pituitary gland secretes an increased amount of FSH
DAY 14
induces the pituitary gland to produce Luteinizing Hormone
DAY 15-28
transforms into the Corpus Luteum.
the union of sperm cell and egg cell.
